Nationwide survey of peatlands as part of The England Peat Map Project (EPM)
EMEC was appointed to survey English peatlands as part of The England Peat Map Project (EPM), working alongside FERA Science Ltd and a network of ecologists from the Wildlife Trust Consultancies. The team conducted over 2,400 vegetation and 900 soil field surveys across England.
Funded by Defra’s £640 million Nature for Climate fund, the EPM project (2021–2024) is part of the Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment Programme (NCEA). It aims to provide essential data for peatland restoration and carbon emissions reporting, contributing to the UK Government's 2050 net-zero target.
By standardizing data collection and leveraging advanced technology, the project delivers cost-effective baseline mapping to enhance greenhouse gas estimations, optimize restoration efforts, and improve conservation strategies. The comprehensive mapping also facilitates collaboration among conservationists, policymakers, and stakeholders, ensuring effective data sharing and long-term environmental benefits.
